Dear students, prospective students, alumni and our valued stakeholders,
Architecture is not merely the act of constructing buildings; it is a multidisciplinary way of thinking that interprets life, environment and society together. For this reason, architectural education requires the balanced development of technical knowledge and creative thinking, analytical reasoning and aesthetic awareness, as well as local values and universal principles. Our department adopts this holistic perspective and aims to educate architects who are not only professionally competent but also inquisitive, responsible and capable of critical thinking.
Our curriculum is structured around a studio-based learning model. Architectural design studios are integrated with theoretical and technical courses to enhance students’ abilities in problem solving, decision making and design development. Throughout this process, students gain an understanding of the relationships between city, environment and society, which forms a fundamental component of our educational philosophy.
We follow a student-centered educational approach. Through an effective advising system, accessible academic staff and an open communication environment, students’ academic and professional development are closely supported. Our goal is to ensure that our graduates enter professional life as confident individuals equipped with strong ethical values and professional competence.
Research constitutes a major priority of our department. Academic studies in sustainable design, building technologies, conservation of cultural heritage and urban environment are supported through national and international publications and projects. Students are encouraged to participate in research activities, fostering a culture of scientific inquiry at the undergraduate level.
We consider university–city–industry collaboration an essential part of architectural education. Partnerships with local authorities, professional chambers and industry representatives allow our students to engage with real-life problems and gain practical experience. In addition, international academic interaction is promoted through exchange programs and collaborative activities.
Contemporary digital design tools and emerging production technologies are integrated into our educational process. Technology is approached not as a substitute for design thinking but as a tool that strengthens it. Thus, students develop both analog and digital representation skills together.
As the Department of Architecture at Balıkesir University, our aim is to educate architects who are aware of local values, responsive to global developments and committed to environmental responsibility. We will be delighted to welcome prospective students to our department and would like to thank our students and alumni for their contributions.
Sincerely,
Head of Department
